In British usage a plot is the list of cues belonging to a department, and plotting is the session at the desk where those cues get built. In American usage the light plot is the drawing showing where every fixture hangs. One word, two documents, produced weeks apart by different people.
Regional usage
| Where | Term | Note |
|---|---|---|
| UK | Plot / plotting session | The cue list, and the session where cues are recorded. |
| US | Light plot | The hanging drawing, produced in pre-production. |
Easy to get wrong
Asking for "the plot" gets you whichever document the person grew up with. Say cue list or hanging plan and the ambiguity disappears.
A sound plot in the UK is the cue list. In some US houses a sound plot is the loudspeaker plan. Same trap, different department.
