Running status

audio

A MIDI compression rule. If a status byte would be the same as the previous one, it can be omitted and only the data bytes sent. It is why a dump of a busy MIDI stream has long runs with no status byte visible, and why Note On at velocity 0 exists as a way of saying Note Off — it lets a whole passage of notes share one status byte.

Easy to get wrong

Data bytes with no preceding status byte are not malformed. A receiver that cannot handle running status will appear to work on a quiet stream and fail on a busy one.
