Quarter frame message

video

The MIDI Timecode message that carries four bits of a timecode value. Eight of them make one complete value, sent four per frame, so a value takes two frames to arrive. That is why a running MTC receiver is always two frames behind the transmitter and needs an offset applied. Locating while stopped uses the full-frame message instead.

Easy to get wrong

The frame rate rides in piece 7, the last one, so a receiver does not know what rate it is being sent until a whole sequence has arrived.
