Deputy stage manager (DSM)
In the British system the DSM sits at the prompt corner, holds the book and calls the show. The stage manager runs the backstage floor and the department and does not usually call. In the American system the production stage manager calls the show and there is no DSM at all.

Easy to get wrong
"Stage manager" does not tell you who calls the show. In the UK it is the DSM, in the US the SM. Get it wrong in a contract and nobody is on the book.
ASM is assistant stage manager, a floor role. Deputy and assistant are not interchangeable ranks in the British structure.
