ISO 13849-1:2023
Safety of machinery - Safety-related parts of control systems - Part 1: General principles for design
Scope
How to design and rate the control system that makes a machine safe, using Performance Levels PL a to PL e derived from architecture, component reliability and diagnostic coverage.
Notes
This is where "PL d, Category 3" on a stage automation or hoist controller spec comes from. It is a property of the whole safety chain - sensor, logic, contactor - not of the PLC alone, so a PL d controller wired to a single unmonitored limit switch is not a PL d system.
