IEEE 802.1AS-2020
IEEE Standard for Local and Metropolitan Area Networks - Timing and Synchronization for Time-Sensitive Applications
Scope
gPTP, the tightly constrained PTP profile used by AVB and TSN. Every bridge on the path must participate, which is what makes AVB switches a shopping list rather than a setting.
Notes
The reason an AVB/Milan network needs AVB-capable switches end to end while a Dante network does not: gPTP requires every hop to be a time-aware bridge, where the AES67 and ST 2059 profiles tolerate ordinary switches with good QoS.
