IEEE 1588-2019
IEEE Standard for a Precision Clock Synchronization Protocol for Networked Measurement and Control Systems
Scope
PTP version 2.1: the master/slave clock election, the sync and delay-request message exchange, and the profile mechanism that AES67, ST 2059 and AVB each specialise. This is how packets on a show network agree what time it is to sub-microsecond accuracy.
Notes
Almost nobody deploys bare 1588. You deploy a profile of it: AES67 media profile, SMPTE ST 2059-2, or gPTP (802.1AS). Two devices can both be "PTPv2" and never lock because they are on different profiles or different domain numbers.
