IEC 61508-1:2010
Functional safety of electrical/electronic/programmable electronic safety-related systems - Part 1: General requirements
Scope
Part 1 of the seven-part IEC 61508 series. It sets out the overall safety lifecycle and the general requirements for electrical, electronic, and programmable electronic systems that carry out safety functions, and it is the basic safety publication from which sector-specific functional safety standards are derived.
Notes
Edition 2.0, published 30 April 2010. This is where the Safety Integrity Level concept comes from, which is why stage machinery control specifications quote SIL ratings for emergency stops and load monitoring. A SIL number on a machinery data sheet is a claim about the whole safety function, not about a single component, so ask what function was assessed.
