Waves SoundGrid Studio
Networked audio processing system that offloads plug-ins to a dedicated SoundGrid server, letting a live console run large plug-in racks at low latency without loading the mixing desk.
Protocols it speaks
| Protocol | Direction | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| dante | bidirectional | Via a SoundGrid/Dante interface, not natively. |
| madi | bidirectional | Via SoundGrid interface hardware. |
What to watch for
SoundGrid is its own network on its own NIC. Sharing that NIC with a show network or the internet causes exactly the dropouts it exists to avoid.
Plug-in licences are on a Waves account and USB drive. The server is useless without them, so the licence drive is show-critical hardware.
Latency is low but not zero. Inserting a SoundGrid rack on a monitor path is a decision to make deliberately with the monitor engineer.
Typical use
- Plug-in racks on a live console
- Multitrack recording and virtual soundcheck
- Offloading processing from the mixing surface
