Chataigne
Modular hub that connects protocols, software and sensors and maps any of them to any other with state machines and sequences. It is the free tool people reach for when two systems have no common language.
Protocols it speaks
| Protocol | Direction | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| osc | bidirectional | Also supports OSCQuery for discovery. |
| art-net | bidirectional | |
| sacn | bidirectional | |
| dmx512 | bidirectional | |
| psn | in | |
| ableton-link | bidirectional | Listed among the built-in protocol modules. |
What to watch for
Modules for third-party software are community maintained. A module built against an older version of the target application can break on the first update and there is no vendor to call.
Chataigne is an interaction engine, not a redundant show controller. For a twenty-year installation that has to boot unattended, treat it as one piece of the plan rather than the whole of it.
Builds exist for Raspberry Pi as well as desktop, but they are separate downloads. Verify the show file on the exact target before install day.
Typical use
- Translating between OSC, MIDI, DMX and serial for an installation
- Sensor input driving lighting, video or audio playback
- Prototyping interaction before it is committed to a show controller
- Bridging a piece of software that has no direct integration with another
