Ardour
Free and open-source digital audio workstation with full multitrack recording, editing and timecode sync. The credible open-source option for virtual soundcheck recording and playback.
Protocols it speaks
| Protocol | Direction | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| ltc | bidirectional | LTC generate and chase, built in. |
| mtc | bidirectional | MIDI timecode in and out. |
| midi | bidirectional | MIDI control and machine control. |
| osc | bidirectional | OSC control surface support. |
| word-clock | in | Clocks to the audio interface. |
| dante | bidirectional | Via Dante Virtual Soundcard or a Dante interface. |
What to watch for
Built-in LTC generate and chase is unusually good for a free DAW, which makes it viable for timecode playback rigs where Pro Tools licensing is not.
Plug-in format support differs by platform. A session built on Linux with LV2 plug-ins will not open the same way on a Windows show machine.
Typical use
- Multitrack recording of a live show
- Virtual soundcheck playback
- Timecode-locked playback on Linux
