Wow and flutter

audio

Speed variation in a mechanical replay medium, named at two rates. Wow is slow variation, below roughly four hertz, heard as pitch drifting. Flutter is faster, heard as roughness or warble on sustained notes. Wow usually points at a capstan or a slipping pinch roller; flutter more often at a bearing or tape dragging on a guide.

Easy to get wrong

Wow and flutter is not a frequency response fault and no equalisation addresses it. It is the transport, and it is measured as a percentage of speed rather than in decibels.
