A voltage-controlled amplifier: a gain stage set by a control voltage rather than by a knob in the signal path. It lets a fader carry DC instead of audio, which is what a VCA group is. Pulling a VCA group down offsets each member channel’s own gain, so their sends and inserts scale with them and no extra amplifier is inserted into the audio.
Regional usage
| Where | Term | Note |
|---|---|---|
| UK / US | VCA | |
| HK / TW | VCA | Said in English. 壓控放大器 appears in writing, almost never on headset. |
Easy to get wrong
A VCA group is not a subgroup. A subgroup sums audio onto a bus; a VCA group sums nothing and only offsets gain. A post-fade send follows one and not the other.
