Smoke
Solid and liquid particulate produced by combustion. In an entertainment context it is the output of a pyrotechnic device rather than of a fog machine, and the distinction matters legally as well as practically: smoke involves heat, residue and a different hazard class from a condensed glycol fog. Coloured smoke is a pyrotechnic composition subliming a dye, not a tinted fog.
Easy to get wrong
"Smoke machine" is the common name for a fog machine, which makes no smoke at all. The machine condenses a fluid; nothing burns.
Coloured smoke is pyrotechnic. It is regulated as pyro, not as an atmospheric effect, and it is in practice an outdoor effect.
