E-stop / emergency stop

automationsafety critical

The mushroom-head button that removes motive power from an automation system immediately. It is a category of safety function with a defined behaviour, not just a big red switch: it must be hardwired, must not rely on the software that might be the thing failing, and must be reachable from wherever a person could be hurt.

Easy to get wrong

An e-stop is not a pause and not a hold. It drops power, which on some machines means a controlled brake and on others means the load stops where friction leaves it. Know which before you need it.
