Damping factor
The load impedance divided by the amplifier’s output impedance, describing how firmly the amplifier resists the voltage a moving loudspeaker cone generates back into it. Cable resistance is in series with the amplifier’s output impedance, so a long or thin speaker run dominates the figure: a couple of tenths of an ohm collapses a quoted factor of several hundred to a few tens.

Regional usage
| Where | Term | Note |
|---|---|---|
| UK / US | Damping factor | |
| HK / TW | 阻尼係數 | Usually written on a spec sheet rather than said aloud. |
Easy to get wrong
A damping factor above roughly 50 is a specification rather than a benefit, because the cable has already decided the figure the driver actually experiences.
