Absolute polarity

audio

Whether a whole signal chain preserves the sign of the original pressure change, so that a source moving towards the microphone ends with a loudspeaker cone moving towards the audience. Largely inaudible on symmetrical waveforms and sometimes audible on asymmetrical ones such as kick drum, bass, brass and plosives. Worth getting right because it is free to get right, and distinct from relative polarity between two sources, which is not subtle and cancels real output.

Easy to get wrong

Absolute polarity is not phase. Polarity is a sign flip, identical at every frequency; phase is a time relationship worth a different number of degrees at every frequency.
