USB Type-C Cable and Connector Specification Release 2.5

Universal Serial Bus Type-C Cable and Connector Specification

USB-IFnetworkingfree to readcurrent

Scope

Defines the USB-C connector: the 24-pin reversible mechanical design, pin assignment, and the Alternate Mode negotiation mechanism that lets a USB-C port carry DisplayPort or Thunderbolt signalling instead of USB data, plus the electrical and mechanical requirements a cable or connector has to meet to be sold as USB-C.

Notes

Listed on USB-IF's own document library as Release 2.5, the current edition; its exact publication date could not be independently confirmed beyond that listing, so no year is asserted here. Prior releases followed roughly an autumn cadence — 2.2 in October 2022, 2.3 in October 2023, 2.4 in October 2024. There is no separate "Thunderbolt connector": Thunderbolt 3 and 4 run over this same 24-pin connector using its Alternate Mode mechanism, where Thunderbolt 1/2 used the older 20-pin Mini DisplayPort connector instead.
