Network Time Protocol Version 4: Protocol and Algorithms Specification
Scope
Defines NTPv4: the on-wire protocol, the clock-filter and selection algorithms, and how a client disciplines a local clock from one or more servers while compensating for network delay.
Notes
Free to read, like every RFC. Worth skimming for the distinction between stepping and slewing a clock, which is the behaviour that surprises people on show machines.
