ISO/IEC 7498-1:1994
Information technology - Open Systems Interconnection - Basic Reference Model: The Basic Model
Scope
Defines the seven-layer OSI reference model — physical, data link, network, transport, session, presentation, and application — as an abstract framework for describing how open systems communicate. It does not define any wire protocol itself; it is the layer vocabulary ("layer 2", "layer 3") that networking documentation on show networks borrows, even though almost no real protocol stack, including TCP/IP, maps onto all seven layers cleanly.
Notes
Second edition, dated 1994-11-15, reviewed and confirmed in 2000; ISO's own catalogue still lists this as the current version with no later edition published. It replaced the first edition, ISO 7498:1984. Companion parts in the same family — 7498-2 (security architecture), 7498-3 (naming and addressing), 7498-4 (management framework) — cover material this basic-model part does not.
