IEEE 802.11-2024
IEEE Standard for Information Technology - Telecommunications and Information Exchange between Systems - Local and Metropolitan Area Networks - Specific Requirements - Part 11: Wireless LAN Medium Access Control (MAC) and Physical Layer (PHY) Specifications
Scope
Defines the Wi-Fi family: the MAC layer and the physical-layer radio specifications (the amendments given the marketing names Wi-Fi 4/5/6/6E/7) for wireless local area networks in the 2.4, 5, and 6 GHz bands. It is a full revision rather than an amendment on top of the prior text: it folds Amendments 1 through 7, published 2021-2024, into one consolidated base standard.
Notes
Approved by the IEEE-SA Standards Board 26 September 2024, published 28 April 2025; supersedes IEEE 802.11-2020. Marketing generation names are not part of the standard itself: "Wi-Fi 6" is the Wi-Fi Alliance's label for the 802.11ax amendment, now folded into this base text along with 802.11ac (Wi-Fi 5), 802.11be (Wi-Fi 7), and the others.
