IEC 60529:1989+AMD2:2013
Degrees of protection provided by enclosures (IP Code)
Scope
Defines the two-digit IP rating: the first digit for solid objects and dust, the second for water, plus the optional supplementary letters. IP65, IP54 and IP20 on a fixture data sheet all come from here.
Notes
An outdoor festival spec that says "IP65" is asking for dust-tight plus low-pressure water jets from any direction. It is not a submersion rating, it is not a rating against pressure washing, and it says nothing about UV or temperature. Two fixtures at the same IP number can behave very differently in a rain event depending on how the connectors are sealed.
