Pure Data

The open-source ancestor of the same dataflow idea, by the author of Max. Smaller, plainer and free, which makes it the pragmatic choice for an installation that has to keep running for years with no licence server in the way, and for embedded work on small Linux boards.

What to watch for

The interface is spare and the documentation assumes you already know the model. Worth learning alongside Max rather than instead of it.
Externals vary in maintenance. Freeze the exact set a piece depends on and archive them with the patch.
