Node-RED
Browser-based flow programming: drag nodes onto a canvas, wire them together, and a message travels the wires. Built for exactly the glue problem — something arrives on one protocol and has to leave on another — and it runs happily on a small machine in a rack for years.
Protocols it speaks
| Protocol | Direction | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| mqtt | bidirectional | First-class, and the reason many people install it. |
| osc | bidirectional | Via community nodes. |
| art-net | bidirectional | Via community nodes. |
| midi | bidirectional | Via community nodes. |
What to watch for
A flow is easy to build and hard to review — the same problem as any patching environment. Export and version it.
Community nodes vary in maintenance. Freeze the set a production depends on.
Typical use
- Translating between two systems that will never support each other
- Installed automation and scheduling
- Prototyping an integration before writing it properly
