MIDI Monitor
Free open-source macOS app that displays MIDI signals going in and out of the computer in real time, including the ability to spy on MIDI sent to any destination by any other app via a virtual CoreMIDI driver.
Protocols it speaks
| Protocol | Direction | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| mtc | in | Generic real-time MIDI monitor; captures MIDI Time Code quarter-frame/real-time messages along with all other MIDI data, but has no dedicated MTC decoder view. |
What to watch for
macOS only, requires macOS 10.13 (High Sierra) or later, so it can't run on older show-control machines still on legacy OS versions.
Typical use
- Confirm whether MIDI Show Control or MTC bytes are actually arriving at a Mac's MIDI input
- Spy on MIDI traffic another application is sending/receiving without needing a hardware MIDI monitor
- Log MIDI streams to hex for offline inspection of malformed or unexpected messages
