dot2 onPC
The free Windows version of MA Lighting's dot2 console software, widely used for teaching and small rigs. One universe of Art-Net or sACN output is free; more universes require a dot2 Node4.
Protocols it speaks
| Protocol | Direction | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| art-net | out | Output broadcast, Art-Net 1, universes 0:0 to 0:7. On onPC the first universe is free (introduced in software v1.2.2.8); beyond that a dot2 Node4 is required. |
| sacn | out | Output multicast, universes 1 to 8, sACN priority fixed at 100. On onPC the first universe is free; beyond that a dot2 Node4 is required. |
| midi | bidirectional | MIDI note remote input, and MIDI note output from cues or the command line. On onPC you must choose the MIDI in and out devices yourself in Tools > MIDI Configuration. |
| midi-show-control | bidirectional | MSC input to control executors, and MSC output to control other devices. |
| mtc | in | MIDI timecode can run cues automatically. Receiving timecode does not require a network session. |
What to watch for
Art-Net and sACN only work inside a session. You have to start a session, even standalone, or nothing leaves the machine.
Only the first Art-Net/sACN universe is free on onPC. Universes 2-8 need a dot2 Node4 (1K), which itself tops out at 1,024 channels spread across the 8 universes.
Art-Net output is broadcast Art-Net 1 on universes 0:0-0:7 and sACN is multicast on 1-8, and the same address must not be assigned to two universes.
MA has discontinued dot2 and moved it to the product archive. It still runs, but there are no new features, and there was never a macOS build.
On onPC the MIDI in and out devices are not selected for you. Nothing MIDI or MSC works until you set them in Tools > MIDI Configuration.
Typical use
- Teaching moving-light programming in schools and colleges
- One-universe control of a small rig from a laptop with no hardware at all
- Offline programming for a dot2 console show file
- Small installs driving up to 8 universes through a dot2 Node4
