SDI Embedded Audio
Also called Embedded audio, SDI audio.
AES3-derived digital audio mapped into the ancillary data space of an SDI video signal. It carries programme, mix-minus and isolated feeds with the picture instead of on separate audio cables.

Continuous streams that are large enough to be sized properly, and that must arrive in order and on time.
What kills it. Anything that starves the link — usually a management transfer nobody scheduled — and jitter that outruns the receive buffer.
What it carries
- Sample rates
- 32 kHz, 44.1 kHz, 48 kHz, 96 kHz
- Audio bit depth
- 24-bit
- Audio channels
- up to 16
- Audio encoding
- AES3-derived linear PCM or SMPTE ST 337 non-PCM data
Audio: ST 299-1 carries four groups of four channels at up to 48 kHz. At 96 kHz, each group carries two channels, reducing the maximum to eight.
What goes wrong
Typical use
- Camera and replay audio carried with video into a production switcher
- Programme and mix-minus feeds through SDI routers and distribution amplifiers
- Audio extraction at recorders, monitors and streaming encoders
