AMWA NMOS

Also called IS-04, IS-05, Networked Media Open Specifications.

The discovery and connection layer that makes SMPTE ST 2110 usable. IS-04 lets devices register and be found; IS-05 does the actual connection management, telling a receiver which sender to listen to. Without it, a 2110 plant is hand-edited SDP files.

Control Small, urgent, must arrive

Small messages that either repeat constantly or fire once. Bandwidth is almost never the problem.

What kills it. Latency and loss on the messages that fire once. A repeating level survives a dropped packet; a GO does not.

Ports

tcp/80 IS-04/IS-05 HTTP APIs on the device (port is deployment-dependent)

What goes wrong

NMOS is not one thing. IS-04 (discovery), IS-05 (connection), IS-08 (audio channel mapping) and others are separate specifications, and "NMOS support" without a list of IS numbers means very little.
Registry-based and peer-to-peer discovery both exist. A device configured for one will not appear to a controller expecting the other.
It carries no media. Every NMOS problem is a control-plane problem, and the ST 2110 essence flows are unaffected by it - which is why a plant can be "working" and completely unroutable.
