MIDI 2.0 / Universal MIDI Packet (UMP)

Also called MIDI 2.0, UMP, MIDI-CI.

A 2020 extension to MIDI adding bidirectional device negotiation (MIDI-CI), higher-resolution controllers, and a new Universal MIDI Packet container that carries both MIDI 1.0 and MIDI 2.0 messages over USB, network, and other digital transports.

Control Small, urgent, must arrive

Small messages that either repeat constantly or fire once. Bandwidth is almost never the problem.

What kills it. Latency and loss on the messages that fire once. A repeating level survives a dropped packet; a GO does not.

What goes wrong

Not wire-compatible with classic 5-pin DIN MIDI 1.0 - UMP is delivered over USB, network, or other digital transports rather than the original DIN connector.
Adoption in touring/theatre gear is still limited; most show-control rigs remain on plain MIDI 1.0 messages even on devices that technically support MIDI 2.0.
