Matter
Also called CHIP, Connected Home over IP.
An application layer that gives connected devices a shared vocabulary: a light is a light, a lock is a lock, and any controller can drive one without a vendor-specific integration. Runs over Thread, Wi-Fi and Ethernet, and is the first serious attempt to make the smart-device world interoperable rather than a set of walled gardens.
Small messages that either repeat constantly or fire once. Bandwidth is almost never the problem.
What kills it. Latency and loss on the messages that fire once. A repeating level survives a dropped packet; a GO does not.
Why this one, and not what the category suggests. Smart-home device control, increasingly the layer a venue meets consumer kit through.
Multicast
- Uses IPv6 multicast for discovery via mDNS.
