KNX

An international standard (ISO/IEC 14543-3) for building automation covering lighting, HVAC, blinds, and access control, which show-control integrators encounter when a venue's architectural/house lighting or building systems must interface with production control.

Control Small, urgent, must arrive

Small messages that either repeat constantly or fire once. Bandwidth is almost never the problem.

What kills it. Latency and loss on the messages that fire once. A repeating level survives a dropped packet; a GO does not.

Why this one, and not what the category suggests. Building control. It switches and dims real loads rather than reporting on them.

What goes wrong

Classic KNX twisted-pair (TP1) runs at only 9600 bit/s - fine for architectural lighting/HVAC but far too slow for anything resembling real-time show cueing.
KNXnet/IP (UDP 3671, multicast 224.0.23.12 by default) bridges KNX onto IP networks, but that multicast traffic should be kept isolated from busy production show networks.
