Upstage 上舞台(舞台後方)
The part of the stage furthest from the audience. On a raked stage it is literally higher, which is where the word comes from; moving upstage of another performer forces them to turn away from the house, which is why the word is also a verb.
中文
舞台上離觀眾最遠的區域。傳統斜舞台後方較高,所以叫「上」。走位到別人上舞台一側會逼對方背向觀眾,這也是 upstage 當動詞用的由來。
Regional usage
| Where | Term | Note |
|---|---|---|
| HK / TW | 上舞台 | 方向以演員面向觀眾為準,不是觀眾視角。 |
Easy to get wrong
Stage directions are from the PERFORMER'S view facing the house, so a director's "your left" needs confirming before anyone moves a boom.
