Scaler
A device that converts an incoming video signal to a different resolution, frame rate or format so a display can take it. Every scale costs a frame or more of latency and some image quality, which is why a well-planned system scales once.

Easy to get wrong
A switcher with "seamless" outputs is scaling on every input. That is where the latency in a presentation system comes from, not from the cable length.
