Onion routing 洋蔥路由
Sending traffic through several relays in layers of encryption, so no single relay knows both ends. The first knows who you are but not where you are going; the last knows where you are going but not who you are. Tor is the well-known implementation. It protects metadata rather than content, and the cost is very high and variable latency.

Easy to get wrong
A VPN moves trust to its operator, who can see both ends. Onion routing splits trust so nobody holds both. Neither hides what you do once you have logged in to something.
